3 Signs of Termite Infestation

This termite evidence can help you avoid expensive and extensive damage to your foundation and the rest of your home

termites photo
Bon Appetit, termites

For many, it’s termite season. Termites, those pesky little critters that you often see eating away at your house like Hansel and Gretel on a candy binge, cause billions of dollars worth of damage every year. The best way to avoid damage is to catch the infestation early, saving money and sanity.

You might even see termite swarming, maybe even wings on your window siles, if you do, call us.

Signs You Have Termites

The first step is to know what to look for, as many insects tend to look the same. Termites have straight antennae with uniform proportional bodies and wings. Homeowners often mistake termites for harmless winged ants. You need to know the difference between ants and termites.  When in doubt, consult a commercial exterminator.

Signs of Termites

Attracted to light, termites often begin munching at windows (wood), doors, porches, decks and basements. Often you’ll see the little critters dining at night near the light source, whether it’s the porch light or a window frame. If you see a swarm of termites around your porch lights or at your window sills, you may have a problem on your hands.

Know Your Termite Activity

Third, termite colonies create termite mud tubes over foundation walls, sill plates and floor joists. This allows them to travel safely around your home, infesting your entire house if not eradicated early. Your home is infested if termites are found in these tubes. If the tubes are broken open and there are no termites, either the colony has moved on completely or they’ve moved to another part of your home.  This is the sign that you need to have the a whole house treatment before they eat you out out of house and home.

If You Suspect a Termite Problem and See Damaged Wood

A commercial exterminator must be consulted as soon as you suspect an infestation to avoid extensive and expensive damage and to begin treatment immediately to kill the termites. Professionals have the tools and knowledge necessary to eliminate the pests and prevent you from paying for expensive repairs.

If you suspect that you have the signs of termite infestation you need to contact a local exterminator, which is Patriot Pest Control.  They can provide you with a complete free termite inspection (termite treatment cost) as well as a free energy usage report.  Contact them today at 293-PEST

Termite Pictures, What do They Look Like?

Termite Pictures

Having termite pictures at your disposal when you think you have a termite infestation can be a great tool in identifying these horribly devastating wood destroying insects.

termite picture photoYou can find termite pictures in many places, but a great place to start is on the Internet. If you do a quick Google search for “termite pictures” and then click on the “Images” tab above the search bar, you will have hundreds and hundreds of termite pictures at your disposal.

Do you have a termite problem?

Once you have the termite pictures, you can then set about deciding whether or not you have a termite problem. If you suspect you have termites, look for burrow holes, shelter tubes, mud tubes, tunnel in damp wood areas and try to see if you can locate insects that look like ants but are white in color. If you see them or any activity, they have found a way to enter your house and you need termite treatment immediately to control this problem.

What you need to do is to have a termite inspection done if you see or locate these insects. You will then learn your treatment options, you can then prevent the termite damage.

If they look like small white ants, then they are worker termites and they will cause the most amount of damage. If you have one, you have hundreds and eradicating them as quickly as possible is necessary to minimize any damage to your structure.

termite picture 1 photoDon’t forget about flying or winged termites

There are also winged termites that swarm during certain times of the year. These termites are called reproductives and are responsible for laying eggs that will insure the continuation of the colony. They look like small ants but with wings.

Getting rid of these types of termites is important as winged reproductives can lay thousands of eggs at one time and hatch time is quick, so you can have an infestation grow within a matter of days. Getting termite bait stations or getting a professional pest control company for the treating these types of termites quickly is a must.

King and Queen keep the colony of termites going

The king and queen termites are also responsible for the continuation of the colony. The queen also lays her own eggs and can live for over ten years producing hundreds of eggs each year. The king is responsible for mating with both the queen as well as the reproductives and he will do so during his entire life span.

They are larger than the other termites – the queen has a lighter colored body and the king has a darker colored body. They most often stay in the colony mound, but then can be found outside the mound as well. Killing the king and queen won’t destroy the colony since other female termites lay eggs as well and there are other queens ready to take her place.
