Bed Bug Dog – Natural Bed Bug Inspectors

A natural bedbug inspector, the bedbug sniffing dog

Bed bug infestation is coming back in the United States. The powerful pesticide that was used to eradicate these blood-sucking parasites, DDT is already banned. Bed bugs are difficult to find as they hide in small holes and crevices, under mattresses and folds of fabrics. Today a new breed of bed bug inspectors is born, called bed bug dogs. These are dogs that were trained to sniff out bed bugs, including bed bug eggs.

Bedbugs making a come back

Bed bugs in the United States were eradicated around the 1940s but the parasites have begun coming back since 1995. The increase in foreign travel, the use of second-hand furniture and the focus on other pests are said to be contributors to the comeback of these blood-feeding parasites.

How bed bugs get into your stuff

Bed bugs bites can cause skin rashes, show symptoms of allergies and can carry some psychological effects. There is the stigma of living in a dirty house, although not exactly true, since bed bugs can also thrive in clean surroundings. Bed bugs can crawl along walls and travel along pipes and wiring. These parasites can hitchhike on furniture, luggage and clothing, and can go from one house to another, particularly in areas where row houses are common.

Bed bug dogs trained for sniffing out bedbugs in a variety of places

Complaints on bed bug infestation in homes, hotels, college dormitories, movie theaters, laundry facilities and various modes of transportation are increasing. And since the bed bugs are difficult to find and cannot be properly detected by human noses, something more sensitive to different smells is needed. Thus, canines are now being specifically trained to be bed bug dogs.

Demand for bedbugs dogs on the rise, Albuquerque already has a bedbug dog, Captain Dale

Demand for bed bug dogs is increasing and has been one of the highest since the demand for bomb-sniffing dogs after 9/11. More dogs are trained to be bed bug dogs. A company in Alabama reported that for the past 12 months it trained 40 dogs for bed bugs, compared to only 6 trained to detect explosives and about 10 trained to sniff out narcotics.

Bed bug dog certification, Albuquerque, New Mexico has that too

The infestation is getting serious that the pest industry in the United States is now offering certification to see to it that the bed bug dogs and their handlers can really find the parasites. Bed bug detection dogs deliver instant results, compared to scientific testing which can take several days before results come out. A bed bug dog can inspect the whole house and in a few hours determine what parts of the house are infested. The price tag for bed bug dog inspection is not cheap but the returns for the investment will far outweigh the initial cost that will be incurred.

Dale the bedbug dog for Patriot Pest Control Albuquerque

Captain Dale the bed bug Detection Dog of Albuquerque, New Mexico has an extremely sensitive nose and can pick up odor of a bed bug from across the room, and he proved this to me in training as he found the test canister by himself while I was receiving instruction from the instructor.

Southern Star Ranch, and Detector Dogs

Sharon Perry, Director of Training for Southern Star Ranch K9 Training Center, started her career in dog training after retiring from 3M as a Chemical Engineer.  Although she had trained her own dogs throughout her life, she decided to obtain additional training for this and begin a new career.  Sharon was certified as an Obedience Trainer from Canine Academy Training Center in 2001.  In 2003 she returned and obtained certification as a Detector Dog Trainer.  In order the train Detector Dogs, Southern Star Ranch, she, Nancy Patton (co-owner) and each of the trainers must maintain licensing through the Private Security Bureau of the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Narcotics Detector dogs

To train Narcotics Detector Dogs, Southern Star Ranch K9 Training Center and is licensed with the DEA.  Southern Star Ranch K9 Training Center has trained and place over 100 Detector Dogs including those trained to detect Narcotics, Accelerants, Termites, Bed Bugs and Allergens.

Several types of Service Dogs have also been trained by Southern Star Ranch.  Some of these were trained on various types and combination’s of allergens including Peanuts, Tree Nuts, Paprika and Shrimp.  These Allergen Detector dogs are service dogs which help to keep their owner safe by alerting to the specific allergens.  Other Service Dogs, including those trained for PTSD, have been trained for specific tasks needed by their owner.

The Detector and Service Dogs from Southern Star Ranch have been placed all over the United States, from Alaska to Florida, east coast to west.  We also have dogs working in Canada, Sweden and South America.

A dog must possess certain traits

A dog must possess certain traits to even be considered for detection work.  Most of these dogs come from shelters.  The traits that make them undesirable as a family pet, are often those that make them good candidates for detection work.  These are dogs that ‘need’ a job.  They are tested to see if they have the special characteristics and drives needed for detection work.  Of approximately 200 – 300 dogs tested, one will pass the test and be accepted into the training program.  The training of a Detector Dog takes a minimum of 3 and 6 months depending on the type of detection.  Some may take as long as 9 months.  One out of every 8-10 dogs will not complete the training.  Those that ‘flunk out’ are given obedience training and adopted out to a good home.

The dogs are pulled from shelters

Many of the dogs that we pull from shelters have only a few days or even hours remaining in their ‘allotted’ time. One dog has an especially touching story.  This dog was actually on the table and had been given a sedative, which precedes euthanasia.  The ‘pink juice’ had been drawn, and the dog was only seconds away from getting the final dose when they received a call that we would take him.  This wonderful dog now has a chance to work (which to him is play), as a Detector Dog.

Training with the dog or handler training is a must

When an individual or company purchases a detector K9 from Southern Star Ranch, they must send a person to attend Handler Training.  This intense training teaches the new Handler about all aspects of the dog and the subtle things that affect their health, their training and performance.  The Handler must maintain a regular schedule of training with their K9 to insure that the dog continues to alert correctly.   Together, the Handler and K9 become an invincible team.Southern Star Ranch, and Detector Dogs

Bed Bug Sniffing Dogs – Captain Dale

July 10 2011

The learning continues with Captain Dale the Bed bug sniffing dog

The last month has been filled with as many learning experiences as was the first week with Captain Dale at the Southern Star Ranch.

whatdobedbugslooklike opt 150x116 photoI had to get used to feeding bed bugs on my arm.

I have woken up everyday ( including weekends) before 6 am since June 5. The first time  I have done that since basic training over a decade ago.

I will continue this forever may be i can sleep in to 7 am one day. I have learned that attitude and mood is critical in working with Captain Dale. I have watched Captain Dale grow as a great dog and friend to me. I have worked extremely hard to be the best handler that I can be and know that I have lot to learn as well as have learned so much.

Captain Dale has such a powerful gift which is his nose and training. He and I have had to get to know each other over the last month and the only way we have is to practice and practice which we did.

I am pleased to say Captain Dale is very capable of finding LIVE BED BUGS. I am so proud of how hard he will work covering any object that is pointed out to him and will instinctively place his nose into the crevices of furniture looking for these heinous bugs.
