Southern Star Ranch K9 Training Center
Sharon Perry, Director of Training for Southern Star Ranch K9 Training Center, started her career in dog training after retiring from 3M as a Chemical Engineer. Although she had trained her own dogs throughout her life, she decided to obtain additional training for this and begin a new career.
Certified Obedience Trainer
Sharon was certified as an Obedience Trainer from Canine Academy Training Center in 2001. In 2003 she returned and obtained certification as a Detector Dog Trainer. In order the train Detector Dogs, Southern Star Ranch, she, Nancy Patton (co-owner) and each of the trainers must maintain licensing through the Private Security Bureau of the Texas Department of Public Safety.
To train Narcotics Detector Dogs, Southern Star Ranch K9 Training Center and is licensed with the DEA. Southern Star Ranch K9 Training Center has trained and place over 100 Detector Dogs including those trained to detect Narcotics, Accelerants, Termites, Bed Bugs and Allergens.
Detection Dogs can Even Detect Allergens
Several types of Service Dogs have also been trained by Southern Star Ranch. Some of these were trained on various types and combinations of allergens including Peanuts, Tree Nuts, Paprika and Shrimp. These Allergen Detector dogs are service dogs which help to keep their owner safe by alerting to the specific allergens. Other Service Dogs, including those trained for PTSD, have been trained for specific tasks needed by their owner.
The Detector and Service Dogs from Southern Star Ranch have been placed all over the United States, from Alaska to Florida, east coast to west. We also have dogs working in Canada, Sweden and South America.
Detection Dogs Must Possess Certain Traits
A dog must possess certain traits to even be considered for detection work. Most of these dogs come from shelters. The traits that make them undesirable as a family pet, are often those that make them good candidates for detection work. These are dogs that ‘need’ a job. They are tested to see if they have the special characteristics and drives needed for detection work.
Of approximately 200 – 300 dogs tested, one will pass the test and be accepted into the training program. The training of a Detector Dog takes a minimum of 3 and 6 months depending on the type of detection. Some may take as long as 9 months. One out of every 8-10 dogs will not complete the training. Those that ‘flunk out’ are given obedience training and adopted out to a good home.
Some Dogs are Just Moments Away from Being Put to Death
Many of the dogs that we pull from shelters have only a few days or even hours remaining in their ‘allotted’ time. One dog has an especially touching story. This dog was actually on the table and had been given a sedative, which precedes euthanasia. The ‘pink juice’ had been drawn, and the dog was only seconds away from getting the final dose when they received a call that we would take him. This wonderful dog now has a chance to work (which to him is play), as a Detector Dog.
Detection Dog Handler’s Must Attend Handler Training
When an individual or company purchases a detector K9 from Southern Star Ranch, they must send a person to attend Handler Training. This intense training teaches the new Handler about all aspects of the dog and the subtle things that affect their health, their training and performance. The Handler must maintain a regular schedule of training with their K9 to insure that the dog continues to alert correctly. Together, the Handler and K9 become an invincible team. See how the team of Dave and Dale, Albuquerque and New Mexico’s first bed bug dog work together.

Although bed bugs were almost obsolete, they are back with a vengeance and something to check for at home, in hotels and even in movie theater seats.
