Why Do You Need Bed Bug Dog Inspection

Being bitten at night, maybe a bed bug dog inspection is necessary?

Bed bugs are again becoming a huge problem in the United States, thanks largely to the frequency of foreign travel and the regular exchange of furniture among homes. There is also the diversion of focus on other pests and their eradication that escalated the problem.

After being eradicated over 50 years ago, more complaints of bed bug infestation are now surfacing from private homes, dorms, hotels, motels, hospitals and even different modes of transportation that bed bug dog inspection is now very necessary.

Bedbugs don’t jump, they crawl

Bed bugs do not jump but can crawl along walls, pipes and wirings and then hide in folds of fabrics, upholstery, under mattresses, crevices and holes on bed frames, wall gaps and in places that are difficult to reach.

Green pest control methods, bed bug dog inspections

While pest control specialists are normally used to inspect homes and establishments for pest infestations, a new breed of green pest control inspectors are available today, particularly for bed bugs. Currently the most in demand service for bed bug inspection is bed bug dog detection system.

Bed bug dogs are highly-trained canines, able to detect the presence of eggs up to adult bed bugs in a few minutes after entering a home or establishment.

Pin point the exact location of the bed bug, live or dead

What is more amazing is that a highly-trained bed bug dog can accurately pinpoint the exact location of the bed bugs in a piece of furniture. A highly-trained bed bug dog is very useful in locating live bed bugs and in differentiating eggs, carcasses and fecal matter and dead bed bugs.

A bed bug dog inspection will detect the presence of bed bugs in areas that cannot be reached by human. Bed bug dog inspection can find bed bugs in wall gaps, inside electrical outlets, behind baseboards, under mattresses, along ceilings, other furniture and under general house clutter, including piles of clothing and stuff toys.

Bed bug dog inspections only take a few minutes

And the bed bug dog inspection can take only a few minutes, without removing mattresses and furniture and prying off walls and baseboards. With the faster and pinpoint accuracy, which is about 96 percent, a homeowner will be able to save in the extermination.

Since the locations are pinpointed, so does the extermination process, as the whole house will not be subjected to spraying, which can be quite costly.

Have your house checked if you are itching and you travel a lot

If you are getting very itchy insect bites, you travel frequently and stay in hotels, motels or condominiums and have some pieces of furniture given by your friends or family, have your house checked.

You should see to it that there are no bed bugs that have hitchhiked with you or your furniture and luggage, since the problem with bed bugs is already escalating.

Bed bug dog inspection to prevent further infestation

Consider bed bug dog inspection to prevent possible or further bed bug infestation as early as possible before you develop skin rashes, allergies and other diseases that may be transferred by these blood-sucking pests.

If you are running an apartment complex or you want to start a new business, there are bed bug sniffing dogs for sale. These dogs are already trained to sniff out bed bugs and may save you a bundle in pest extermination. Bed Bug Dog Training Process

The training process of a bed bug dog and handler, they are a pair

Bed bugs have made a comeback in the United States after almost half a century after their eradication. It is difficult to find the hiding places of bed bugs and they crawl anywhere. The focus on other pests, increased foreign travel and the use of second-hand furniture are some of the reasons attributed to the re-introduction of bed bugs in the United States.

Normally, you can detect the presence of bed bugs by the swollen and highly itchy bites you will get on your neck, face, upper arms and shoulders. In heavily infested areas, it’s the almond sweet smell that bed bug emits that announce the presence of these pests.

Don’t wait till its too late, use a bed bug sniffing dog

Rather than wait for a home or establishment to be heavily infested by bed bugs, there are now environmentally-friendly bed bug inspectors – bed bug dogs – that are trained to detect the presence of bed bugs in private homes, motels, hotels, dormitories and other establishments where humans stay for some time. Bed bug dogs have been proven to be very effective in pinpointing where the bed bugs are.

Bed bug dog training and certification

But the canines need to undergo bed bug dog training, too just like how canines are trained to sniff bombs and drugs. And there is an increasing demand now for highly trained bed bug dogs and handlers, more that what can be provided. Dogs have about 250 million scent receptors while humans only have about 5 million.

Though not born to identify particular scents, dogs can be properly trained to identify up to 30 odors. Dogs and bed bugs therefore share a relationship, as dogs can be trained to recognize the almond-sweet scent given off by bed bugs. Bed bug dog training uses the same technique of food/reward training.

Hunting breeds make great bed bug sniffing dogs

According to Bill Whitstine, certified master trainer, and well-known leader in the field of canine training since 1989, many breeds of dogs can be trained to be bed bug dogs, but hunting breeds are very suitable to be trained to sniff out bed bugs. It is because hunting breeds such as Labradors, Aussies, beagles, border collies and Jack Russell terriers, are great trackers.

Mr. Whitstine also added that the dog should have plenty of drive and should be friendly, energetic and intelligent. It is best to train dogs to be bed bug dogs that are about 10 months to three years old. The dogs will be individually trained between 600 to 800 hours for the dogs to accurately detect bed bugs from eggs to adult.  And once trained the dogs sniffing bed bugs can work for 8 to 10 years.

Bed bug dogs can smell the difference between live and dead bed bugs

Bed bug dog training involves familiarizing the dog on the scent of bed bugs, but not only the adult ones. They are trained to know the difference between live and dead bed bugs. They are also trained to differentiate between cast skins, fecal matter and eggs.

Bed bug dog training also includes training the dog to accurately pinpoint where the location of the bed bugs are in a piece of furniture, a skill that will take an expert pest control specialist hours to do.

They can sniff out a bedbug in two to three minutes

Successful dogs that pass bed bug dog training will be able to sniff out bed bugs within two to three minutes after it has entered a house, a hotel room or any place where humans stay or sleep. A dog that has passed bed bug dog training will have around 96 percent to 98 percent accuracy in sniffing where the pests are hiding.

Bed bug dog training and handler training

The success rate of bed bug sniffing dogs makes them so much in demand. As the demand is higher than the supply and the bed bug infestation getting more widespread, different states and counties are looking at training and certifying dogs and handlers to be bed bug dogs. In Albuquerque, New Mexico, David Erik Swanson and his Labrador retriever Captain Dale have recently been certified as the first bed bug dog and handler team in the area and they are the only bed bug dog and handler in New Mexico right now. They received their training in Austin, Texas.

If you are in New Mexico and you are in the need of the services of Captain Dale and David, call 505-293-7378 and make an appointment today.  We guarantee you won’t have bedbugs when this team is finished.

Demand for Bed Bug Sniffing Dogs is Increasing

Bed Bug sniffing dogs are on the rise

Who would believe that bed bugs would be making a comeback in a developed country like the United States where the parasites had been successfully eradicated in the 1940s? But this is true and news are starting to appear announcing that natural, highly trained bed bug inspectors, bed bug sniffing dogs are now in great demand.

Many different establishments being invaded

Complaints are starting to surface that private homes, motels and hotels, college dorms, laundry facilities, different types of transportation, even some hospitals are getting infested with the blood-feeding parasites.

Where do the Bed Bugs Live?

It is very difficult to find the parasites, which although not nocturnal normally feeds at night, since the parasites like to hide in places where people sleep and stay for several hours. This means beds and upholstered couches. Bed bugs hide in folds of clothing, bed sheets and pillows, as well as curtains. They also live in crevices and small holes on bed frames and under mattresses.

They suck blood for about two hours undetected by their hosts. Although they can live for several months without feeding, when available hosts are present, they normally feed every five days. They are attracted to the presence of carbon dioxide and the warmth emitted by humans.

Do bed bugs bite dogs?

With the effectiveness of bed bug sniffing dogs, you may be asking a particular question, “Do bed bugs bite dogs?” Yes, they do, as bed bugs feed on blood so pets like cats and dogs, hamsters and other animals can be bitten by bed bugs.  And they can spread quickly since these small parasites can crawl along walls, wiring and pipes and can hitchhike on clothing, animal hair and luggage. It is not filth that attracts bed bugs, as they can be present in clean environments. But clutter scattered around the house are good hiding places for these pests.

Not only are the bed bug sniffing dogs able to find the location of bed bugs, the dogs are also able to sniff even the bed bug eggs, giving accommodation owners the instant results on which part of their house or facility is infested. Bed bugs in Albuquerque beware, Captain Dale is looking for you!

Bed bug sniffing dogs best alternative for green pest control method

Although the use of bed bug sniffing dogs is relatively new, dogs are the best alternative for a green pest control method. They are small and agile and able to reach where human may not be able to reach. Their noses are more powerful than that of humans and they can sniff out the bed bugs in all the life stages of the parasite, from eggs to adults.

Cleaning up, getting rid of bedbugs, faster and cheaper using bedbug sniffing dogs

Immediate results and accurate pinpointing of infested areas make eradication of bed bug easier, faster and cheaper for home and establishment owners, compared to traditional methods of spraying the whole area. Highly-trained bed bug sniffing dogs are increasing in number although the demand right now far outweighs the supply, testimony to the increasing rate of bed bug infestation.

The International Forensic Detection Canine Association places the number of available highly-trained dogs sniffing bed bugs for hire at 200, still a very small number but this is expected to increase to provide service to the growing demand. New businesses came out of this need, as there are already bed bug sniffing dog academies and companies involved in training bed bug training dogs for sale.
