Bed bugs have made a comeback in the United States after almost half a century after their eradication. It is difficult to find the hiding places of bed bugs and they crawl anywhere. The focus on other pests, increased foreign travel and the use of second-hand furniture are some of the reasons attributed to the re-introduction of bed bugs in the United States.

Normally, you can detect the presence of bed bugs by the swollen and highly itchy bites you will get on your neck, face, upper arms and shoulders. In heavily infested areas, it’s the almond sweet smell that bed bug emits that announce the presence of these pests.

It is because hunting breeds such as Labradors, Aussies, beagles, border collies and Jack Russell terriers, are great trackers.
Mr. Whitstine also added that the dog should have plenty of drive and should be friendly, energetic and intelligent. It is best to train dogs to be bed bug dogs that are about 10 months to three years old. The dogs will be individually trained between 600 to 800 hours for the dogs to accurately detect bed bugs from eggs to adult. And once trained the dogs sniffing bed bugs can work for 8 to 10 years.
Bed bug dogs can smell the difference between live and dead bed bugs
Bed bug dog training involves familiarizing the dog on the scent of bed bugs, but not only the adult ones. They are trained to know the difference between live and dead bed bugs. They are also trained to differentiate between cast skins, fecal matter and eggs.
Bed bug dog training also includes training the dog to accurately pinpoint where the location of the bed bugs are in a piece of furniture, a skill that will take an expert pest control specialist hours to do.
They can sniff out a bedbug in two to three minutes
Successful dogs that pass bed bug dog training will be able to sniff out bed bugs within two to three minutes after it has entered a house, a hotel room or any place where humans stay or sleep. A dog that has passed bed bug dog training will have around 96 percent to 98 percent accuracy in sniffing where the pests are hiding.
