How Do You Get Rid of Ants?

How to get rid of ants

I have a friend who lives in Australia and he was kind enough to let me know how they get rid of ants down there.  Of course, here in New Mexico we do things a bit different and will have another article explaining that in detail.  So for the time, here is how they do it down under…

Living in a very dry area of Australia, I am actually very happy
to see all the ants coming inside the house as this means we are in for lots of rain. Trouble is, leave any trace of food around and it is covered in ants in seconds. The dog/cat dishes have to be emptied and cleaned straight after feeding and make sure the kids don’t leave the honey or cordial out!

The problem lies when the ant problem becomes an infestation and they start taking over the house. Then we have to do something to fix the problem. How do you get rid of ants from the home?

You have to kill more ants than you see

There is no point in just killing ants you can see, this is actually only about 1% of the entire colony and when they do not come home to the nest more ants are automatically sent out. This is why you need a good pest control and ant control. You have to start to get rid of ants right now…

The ideal situation or the best way is to find the main nest where the queens and all the other ants are and eradicate the entire colony with liquid bait.

You can try following the ant trail back to the main colony but this is near impossible as the trail may go behind skirting boards, along the inside of the walls and out somewhere at the other end of the house.

Baits for ants

The most effective treatment, method for homeowners when they see the sign that they have ants is to bait the ants that are inside the home. The advantage of using Baits is the ants will take the poison back to the nest, the queen and the rest of the colony will feed on the bait, food and the entire colony will be destroyed.

Place the bait at different points along the trail the ants have been using. You should see heaps of ants scurrying to the bait. Do not kill them, just let them feed and you will see them leaving to go back to the nest, this is good!

The ant activity should subside within a few days. Keep topping up the bait until no more ants are seen.

There is more than one type of bait for ants

Okay, you have put down bait but the ants are ignoring it! Would you believe that ants are fussy eaters and can alter their eating habits at different times of the year. It does not mean the bait is no good, just that the ants are looking for another type of food source, so try another bait such as liquid bait.

The above baiting treatment will solve your indoor problem but if you have heaps of ants outside they will eventually come back indoor looking for food or water. Therefore you should be treating both the home and yard for ants.

Treat all area’s for ants

Foundation – For effective ant control, you should spray the outside foundation of the home with an Insecticide repellent. A guide for spraying would be two foot up by 1 foot out, all the way around the foundation. Also treat the Windowsills, Door trims, Pipes, Cables and Pathways.

This should be done regularly, probably every quarter.

Yard – Treating the yard. The best method for treating the yard is to use both Granules and liquid bait (spray). Granules will last approximately 2-3 months. Liquid baits evaporate and need to be topped up regularly, especially if you live in a hot dry climate. Check frequently to make sure they have not dried up..

To recap on how do you get rid of ants, Gel Bait for Indoors, Sprays for the Foundation, Granules and Liquid Bait for outdoors. This will solve all your ant problems if repeated regularly.

Why Should You Use a Natural Insecticide/Pesticide?

Natural Insecticide

Some say that a natural insecticide cannot, by its nature, be as effective as a synthetic one. Chemical insecticides are used often by large farms. It may seem that the time for the use of natural insecticide is past, yet they are still in use. So, why use a natural insecticide?

First, there is an abundance of plants that can be used for their natural insecticide properties. Over 1500 are presently being used for control of pests. This provides a variety of methods to get rid of and repel unwanted insects.

Factors for natural insecticide

There are many factors that will determine which kind of natural insecticide you will use for treatment. Some are more inexpensive. Some are more easily obtained than others. Some are safer to humans and pets. If you decide to use a natural insecticide, you will have many choices.

Most types of natural insecticides that you apply are biodegradable. This means that when the substance has served its purpose, it doesn’t stick around to cause damage to the environment. This is one of the best reason’s to use natural insecticides and pesticides when gardening in your backyard.

It is washed away with the rain. It degrades and becomes a part of the soil with no harmful residue. A natural insecticide is often used when there is concern about a synthetic insecticide that is sold commercially.

Normal synthetic insecticide and pesticide are toxic

A synthetic insecticide can contain poisons and toxins that are not found in a natural insecticide. These can be harmful to living things other than the insects they were intended for.

Why kill beneficial insects

Synthetic chemical insecticides often contain ingredients that kill beneficial insects. These insects may be bees that pollinate fruits and vegetables.

They may be ladybugs or butterflies, which are also helpful to have in a garden. A natural insecticide will probably leave beneficial insects safe. One downside of using a natural insecticide is cost.

Many that are sold in garden centers are more expensive than their synthetic counterparts. If you can, you may be willing to pay the extra cost. Yet, if you can’t afford a natural insecticide that is sold in a store, you have the option of making your own.

Many health issues from synthetic chemical insecticides

The use of synthetic chemical insecticides has long been associated with a variety of chronic health conditions. The advantage of using a natural insecticide is that these conditions rarely occur with their use.

When you use a natural insecticide, you can be sure that your produce will be safe to eat. All you need to do is to make sure that you follow instructions.

Find out how long to wait after spray application of the natural insecticides to harvest.

No fossil fuels with natural insecticides

One advantage of a natural insecticide is that they don’t use fossil fuels. Many of the chemical varieties do. Also, if you use a natural insecticide that is locally available, you will save on transportation costs.

There are countless recipes for people to use to make homemade natural insecticide on their own. You can look on the internet, or in your local library or bookstore for the recipes. These allow you to make inexpensive yet effective natural organic pest control for your own use. This is a great way for gardening pest control, using a homemade natural insecticide.

Reasons to use natural insecticides

If you’re looking for a reason to use a natural insecticide, you will find several. Safety of plants and animals, environmental protection, and ease of use are only a few. A natural insecticide is truly a viable alternative to chemicals.

Termite Pictures, What do They Look Like?

Termite Pictures

Having termite pictures at your disposal when you think you have a termite infestation can be a great tool in identifying these horribly devastating wood destroying insects.

termite picture photoYou can find termite pictures in many places, but a great place to start is on the Internet. If you do a quick Google search for “termite pictures” and then click on the “Images” tab above the search bar, you will have hundreds and hundreds of termite pictures at your disposal.

Do you have a termite problem?

Once you have the termite pictures, you can then set about deciding whether or not you have a termite problem. If you suspect you have termites, look for burrow holes, shelter tubes, mud tubes, tunnel in damp wood areas and try to see if you can locate insects that look like ants but are white in color. If you see them or any activity, they have found a way to enter your house and you need termite treatment immediately to control this problem.

What you need to do is to have a termite inspection done if you see or locate these insects. You will then learn your treatment options, you can then prevent the termite damage.

If they look like small white ants, then they are worker termites and they will cause the most amount of damage. If you have one, you have hundreds and eradicating them as quickly as possible is necessary to minimize any damage to your structure.

termite picture 1 photoDon’t forget about flying or winged termites

There are also winged termites that swarm during certain times of the year. These termites are called reproductives and are responsible for laying eggs that will insure the continuation of the colony. They look like small ants but with wings.

Getting rid of these types of termites is important as winged reproductives can lay thousands of eggs at one time and hatch time is quick, so you can have an infestation grow within a matter of days. Getting termite bait stations or getting a professional pest control company for the treating these types of termites quickly is a must.

King and Queen keep the colony of termites going

The king and queen termites are also responsible for the continuation of the colony. The queen also lays her own eggs and can live for over ten years producing hundreds of eggs each year. The king is responsible for mating with both the queen as well as the reproductives and he will do so during his entire life span.

They are larger than the other termites – the queen has a lighter colored body and the king has a darker colored body. They most often stay in the colony mound, but then can be found outside the mound as well. Killing the king and queen won’t destroy the colony since other female termites lay eggs as well and there are other queens ready to take her place.

What Is a Natural Insecticide?

Natural Insecticide / Pesticide

Organic gardening appeals to some people because it sounds important. It makes gardening sound exotic, like it’s on some higher level. Organic gardening is accomplished by avoiding the use of laboratory-made fertilizers, growth substances, antibiotics, or pesticides.

This means using nature’s tools to grow your plants, fruits, and vegetables. It’s a way of being kinder to the earth. Using natural insecticides is a part of that process and has grown in popularity. If done properly, it is low cost.

Use the Eco-System to our Advantage

You can use nature to your advantage if you understand and take the time to make it work for you. If you learn to grow or produce your own insecticides, you’re also aiding the eco-system by not putting man-made lethal concoctions into the dirt and air. You can help reduce the negative effect on the ozone layer by doing your part to help nature and at the same time control pests.

Botanical is of plants. Plants are natural. So, botanical insecticides are naturally created from plants and plant parts. One such insecticide is sabadilla. It’s gotten from the seeds of a plant similar to a lily and used in dust (powder) or spray form before harvest. It poisons and will kill insects when it touches them or gets inside their bodies. This is a fantastic insect control and insect repellant.

Still Use Natural Organic Pest Control with Caution

Natural insecticides must still be used with caution. They’re not without side effects or problems. You must learn how to use them properly so that they’re a benefit and not a hindrance. Washing your fruits and vegetables is still recommended before eating them or using them in cooking if you use natural insecticides.

A misconception about insecticides of any kind can be that if you use a stronger concentration and/or more of it, the benefits will come quicker and will last longer. But this is an unhealthy attitude in many cases. If a technique or product isn’t working, make a change only by being aware of the effects. What you need may simply be a different product or an extra helper to go along with it.

Questions you need to ask about natural insecticides besides ‘what are they’ are:

  • 1. Do they react to any other substances in a negative way?
  • 2. What are the side-effects?
  • 3. What harm can they do to me or my children?
  • 4. What harm can they do to my pets or other plants?
  • 5. What are the side effects if any is ingested accidentally?
  • 6. What is the most effective form of use (dust, powder, spray, etc.)?
  • 7. How often should it be applied to treat the problem?
  • 8. What does it cost?
  • 9. Where do I get it?
  • 10. How do I store any leftovers and for how long?
  • 11. Can I make this insecticide safely myself?

Some of the natural insecticide, pesticide that are well-known are pyrethrum, nicotine, sabadilla, rotenone, and insecticidal soap. Cornmeal, garlic, and some hot peppers can also be effective an effective treatment against insect pests.

It’s still best to try to control gardening pest or crop pests in the early stages than to load up on insecticide of any kind. The best control can be awareness and early removal of the bugs.
